Marine Surveyors for Cruising Sailboats
A marine surveyor is the independent expert who tells you what's actually wrong with a boat. Pre-purchase surveys are the most common reason cruisers hire surveyors — and getting it right is one of the better investments in cruising. Insurance surveys and damage surveys are the other common categories.
Types of survey
- Pre-purchase: Most thorough. Out-of-water inspection, in-water systems check, sea trial. Required by most lenders and many insurers.
- Insurance: Lighter scope. Verifies condition meets underwriting criteria. Required at policy inception and periodically.
- Damage: Post-incident. Documents extent of damage for claim.
- Pre-passage: Some insurers require for ocean crossings.
- Pre-export: Documenting condition before international shipment.
