Fiberglass & Gelcoat Repair for Sailboats
Fiberglass hulls are durable but not invincible. After a few seasons of cruising every boat collects: dock dings, anchor strike marks, the occasional bumping with a reef, gelcoat chips around stanchions, and the long-term drift toward dullness. Knowing what's cosmetic versus structural — and what's worth paying a professional for — is foundational cruiser knowledge.
Types of repair
Cosmetic gelcoat
Dings, chips, scratches in the gelcoat layer. The laminate beneath is intact. Repair: clean, fill with matched gelcoat compound, sand, polish. DIY-able with a kit; professional finish is faster and more uniform.
Structural laminate
The fiberglass beneath gelcoat is damaged. Crack patterns radiate. Repair requires removing damaged material, laying up new glass with epoxy or polyester resin, then re-gelcoating. Professional work.
Osmosis / blistering
Water penetrates the laminate over years, creating blisters. Light surface blisters — manageable. Deep blistering — full osmosis treatment (peel, dry, re-laminate with epoxy barrier coat).
Core damage
Cored decks or hulls where the core (balsa or foam) has absorbed water and rotted. Major repair — open the laminate, replace the core, re-laminate. Often discovered during survey.

Where to find good work
Cruisers report consistently strong fiberglass work at: Fort Lauderdale, Newport, Cape Town (catamaran builder heritage), Phuket (composite expertise), and the larger UK/EU refit yards. Lesser-known but capable centres include Marmaris (Turkey) and many Italian yards.
