VHF & Communication Systems
Cruiser communications has changed dramatically. Starlink in particular has displaced SSB and Iridium as the primary offshore communication tool for many cruisers, while VHF remains the foundational short-range safety system. Here's how the landscape looks in 2026.
The communication stack
- VHF with DSC: Mandatory. Short-range (25–50 miles). MMSI registered. Modern units have integrated GPS and digital distress.
- Handheld VHF backup: Essential. Lithium battery, waterproof.
- Starlink (Maritime or Roam): Primary offshore data for most cruisers in 2026. Streaming-capable; weather routing simple.
- Iridium GO! / Iridium 9555: Backup or for those wanting lower-power, smaller-equipment global coverage.
- SSB / HF: Legacy but still useful for cruiser nets, free weather (Sailmail), and as Starlink backup.
- Cellular (with marine antenna): Coastal supplement; surprisingly capable with a Poynting or similar booster.
What it costs
| Equipment | Common range (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed VHF with DSC | $350–700 | Standard Horizon, Icom, Garmin |
| Handheld VHF | $150–300 | Waterproof, GPS integrated |
| Starlink Maritime hardware | $2,500–5,000 | Plus high-volume plan |
| Starlink Roam (cheaper option) | $700 | Plus $150–250/month |
| Iridium GO! | $1,000–1,200 | Plus $100–150/month |
| SSB install (radio + tuner + antenna) | $3,000–8,000 | Full installation |
| AIS transceiver | $800–1,400 | Class B |
Recommendations
- Coastal cruising: Fixed VHF + DSC + handheld + cellular booster.
- Caribbean / Med: Add Starlink Roam.
- Ocean passages: Starlink (Roam works in most areas) + Iridium GO! as backup.
- Polar / remote: Iridium primary; Starlink supplemental where coverage exists.
Frequently asked questions
VHF vs SSB?
VHF: line-of-sight, mandatory. SSB: long-range HF, optional.
Still need SSB with Starlink?
Cruisers report Starlink has reduced SSB demand significantly. Useful as backup if Starlink fails.
DSC?
Digital distress on VHF. Required on modern radios; needs MMSI registration.
Iridium vs Starlink?
Iridium: lower bandwidth, smaller, global. Starlink: high bandwidth, mostly global, lower cost per byte.
Full refit cost?
Modern stack (VHF + handheld + Starlink): $1,500–6,000 plus monthly subscriptions.
