Marine Services in Richards Bay, South Africa

Richards Bay is the cruiser's entry to South Africa from the Indian Ocean. Boats crossing from Madagascar, Mauritius, or Rodrigues make their landfall here — it's the only sheltered yacht harbour on the east coast. Zululand Yacht Club has been hosting visiting cruisers for decades and runs a welcoming reciprocal arrangement.

The town itself is industrial — Richards Bay is South Africa's biggest coal export port — but the yacht harbour at Tuzi Gazi is segregated from commercial traffic and feels its own world. Most cruisers stage here for a week or two before running the Agulhas current down to Cape Town.

The yacht club and harbour

Zululand Yacht Club operates the cruiser-friendly side. Floating berths, fuel, water, restaurant, and an established cruiser community. Tuzi Gazi small craft harbour next door has additional capacity.
