Propeller & Shaft Work for Sailboats
The propeller, shaft, and the bearings that support them form a system that's easy to ignore — until vibration starts or the cutlass bearing finally lets go. Most cruising sailboats need a prop and shaft inspection every haul, and the work that follows is among the more important haul-out tasks.
What needs attention
- Prop inspection: Check for damage, bent blades, pitting from electrolysis.
- Prop puller test: Verify prop can be removed if needed.
- Cutlass bearing wear: Hand-test shaft for play; replace at noticeable wear.
- Shaft alignment: Feeler gauge between coupling halves; should be uniform.
- Shaft inspection: Look for pitting, scoring, or bend.
- Stuffing box: Repack flax stuffing or service dripless seal.
- Zinc anode: Replace at every haul.
