Fuel Tank Cleaning & Polishing

Diesel fuel ages badly. Water condensation, biological growth (diesel bug), and tank sediment all conspire to clog filters at the worst possible moments — typically on a lee shore in 25 knots. Fuel polishing is the maintenance practice that prevents that scenario.

It's not exotic. Most cruiser ports have at least one mobile specialist with a polishing rig, and the service is cheap relative to the consequences of a fouled fuel system mid-passage.

What polishing does

A polishing rig pumps fuel out through fine filters (down to 2 microns) and back into the tank. Multiple passes remove suspended water, microbial growth, and accumulated sludge. A complete polish on a typical cruiser tank takes 4–8 hours depending on contamination level.

Symptoms that mean polish-now

  • Racor filter clogs more than once a season
  • Dark deposits or sludge in the Racor bowl
  • Water visible at the tank bottom (check with a stick or fuel finder paste)
  • Engine struggles to maintain RPM at full throttle
  • Mysterious power loss in rough conditions (sloshing brings sediment into the pickup)

What it costs

ServiceCommon range (USD)Notes
Fuel polishing (one tank)$300–600Typical cruiser tank
Polish + biocide additive$350–700Preventive treatment
Tank removal + clean$1,500–4,000If polish isn't enough
Filter replacement (Racor + secondary)$80–150Parts only
Permanent polishing system install$1,200–2,800Continuous filtration during running

Prevention

  • Keep tanks full when possible (reduces water condensation).
  • Biocide additive at every fuel-up — Stastrol, Biobor JF, or equivalent.
  • Drain water trap weekly when underway.
  • Polish preventatively every 2–3 years.
  • Source fuel from busy docks (high turnover = fresher fuel).

Frequently asked questions

What is fuel polishing?

Pumping fuel through fine filters and back into the tank to remove water, sludge, microbial growth.

Diesel bug?

Microbial growth at the water-fuel interface. Looks like dark sludge. Prevent with biocide.

When to polish?

Repeated filter clogs, dark Racor deposits, water in tank. Preventive: every 2–3 years.

Cost?

One-time polish $300–600. Tank removal + clean $1,500–4,000.

Where to find?

Mobile specialists in every cruiser hub. Diesel mechanics often offer as add-on.
