Vuda Point, Fiji: Haul-Out in Paradise

The cyclone pit at Vuda is one of the more unusual sights in cruising — physical holes in the hardstand that boats sit in below ground level, sheltering hulls and rigs from cyclone-force winds. For a minority of South Pacific cruisers, Vuda is the alternative to the NZ/Australia run.

Why some choose Vuda

  • Warm-weather refit (no NZ winter)
  • Lower cost than NZ/AU (USD 2,500–4,000 vs NZD 4,000–6,500)
  • Stay in the tropics — no big southbound passage required
  • Tight Vuda cruiser community
  • Insurance generally accepts the pit storage

Why most still choose NZ/AU

  • Deeper trade pool for refit work
  • Better parts logistics
  • Lifestyle (cities, hospitals, modern infrastructure)
  • Some insurance policies require south of cyclone zone, not the pit specifically
  • If a cyclone actually hits, the pit is unproven for the largest storms

The Vuda experience

The pit is a 1m deep hole the boat is craned into and propped against. The hull sits below the ground level; the deck and rig are above. In a cyclone, the surrounding earth shelters the hull from the worst wind exposure. Cradles and tie-downs handle the rest.

Cruisers report Vuda has handled multiple Category 3+ cyclones without loss. Reports from the Category 5 storms are mixed — the pits work, but the surrounding infrastructure suffers significantly.

Costs

ItemRange (USD)
Cyclone-season pit (Nov–April)$2,500–4,000
Regular hardstand / month$300–500
Haul + relaunch (40 ft)$400–650
Labour / hour$25–40

Who chooses Vuda

Cruisers report Vuda makes sense for: people who don't want the NZ run, those wanting Fiji-based cruising both before and after the season, budget-focused cruisers, and those with established Fiji relationships. Less appropriate for: cruisers wanting deep refit work, those with insurance requiring south-of-cyclone-zone specifically, or first-time cyclone-season planners who want maximum certainty.
