Shelter Bay, Panama: Before & After the Canal
Shelter Bay Marina sits on the Caribbean side of the Panama Canal, a few miles from Colon. For cruisers heading either direction through the Canal, Shelter Bay is the staging point — paperwork, agent meetings, line handlers, the final tank-top before the transit, and the first stop on the other side.
Pre-transit
- Agent selection: Roy Bravo, Erick Galvez, and Pete Stevens are the regularly used names. Cost USD 1,500–2,800 all-in including measurement, transit fees, line handlers.
- Boat measurement: Canal authorities measure the boat. Fixed by overall length. Pay at the bank.
- Line handlers: Four required for the transit. Agents arrange them; many cruisers help by line-handling other boats reciprocally.
- Pre-transit inspection: Officials check the boat. Bring all paperwork.
- Provisioning: Shelter Bay has minimal stores. Major shopping in Colon or Panama City requires a car.
Transit logistics
The Canal transit takes 1–2 days. Day 1: enter Gatun Locks (3 chambers up), motor across Gatun Lake to a moor. Day 2: Pedro Miguel and Miraflores locks down to the Pacific. Some boats do it all in one long day; many split for crew rest.
Post-transit (Pacific side)
- Balboa Yacht Club moorings — old-school setup, cheap, social
- La Playita Mooring Field — alternative anchorage
- Flamenco Marina — more polished facility
- Provisioning Panama City — excellent (Pricesmart Costco-equivalent, full supermarkets)
