Marine Services in San Diego, California

San Diego is the US West Coast's deepest marine services hub. Shelter Island concentrates the yard infrastructure: Driscoll, Knight & Carver, Shelter Island Boatyard, Sun Harbor Marine, and Marine Group Boat Works all operate within walking distance of each other, with travelifts up to 165 tons and trade depth matching anywhere on the continent.

It's not cheap. US labour rates and California overhead push costs significantly above Mexican alternatives. Cruisers cost-conscious about bottom jobs cross to Ensenada; cruisers wanting specialist work — composites, complex electronics, hydraulics — stay in San Diego.

The yards (Shelter Island)

  • Driscoll Boat Works — venerable cruiser yard, full service.
  • Knight & Carver — large travelift capacity, refit specialists.
  • Shelter Island Boatyard — broad contractor network.
  • Sun Harbor / Marine Group — larger commercial scale.
